AutomationX contract for new biscuit factory in Latvia

Orkla ASA is a multinational company listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange and leading supplier of branded consumer goods in various industries, including the food industry in particular.

With Project “Anna”, a high-profile factory footprint was initiated within the Orkla group. The main goal of this project is to enhance Orkla Confectionery & Snacks’ competitiveness within biscuits category. Orkla is concentrating its production of biscuits in one location and is building a new factory in Ādaži (outside Riga, Latvia). The new factory will ensure Orkla’s future competitiveness and innovative capacity with the help of modern technological equipment.
Our company was awarded with the contract for the delivery of the automation system for Raw Material Handling as well for the implementation of an MES system for the entire plant. Our DCS – Distributed Control System – takes over the control and visualization of the Raw Material Handling, which is covered by 13 production lines. In addition, AutomationX supplies the electrical components (control equipment, control cabinets, assembly and cabling material) and carries out the cabling and assembly work on site. With our MES solution based on the ISA S95 standard, the relevant areas of batch/recipe management, production execution, quality management, label management and performance reporting will be supported.
With the choice of the AutomationX solution, Orkla relies on our many years of experience in the food industry, as well as on the advantages of the implementation of a consistent system, which covers all areas from visualization, control sytem to the MES solution on one platform – our in-house system automationX®.
The project period will run until middle of 2023. In autumn 2021, the installation and assembly of the new raw material handling machinery including the electrical equipment will begin. The commissioning of the Raw Material Handling control system and the MES solution follows this phase. In subsequent phases, existing production lines will be transferred from other plants to the new plant in Ādaži and put into operation.
We are grateful for the trust Orkla has placed in us and look forward to a good cooperation and successful project implementation.
